Why New Colors?
The name of my practice was inspired by the lyrics of “Stained Glass Man” by Luke Bell. In his song he sings, “Stained glass man, can you make a window for me? I’m doing the best that I can. I need new colors don’t you see.”
Throughout life, many of us encounter challenging and painful experiences that take us away from the life we want to be living. You may have tried everything and still are unable to heal or make changes, leaving you feeling shattered or like life has lost its color. Healing occurs when we are able to put the pieces together to create a new, whole self, just like piecing together a stained-glass window. But, this is difficult to do alone. Gretchen Schmelzer wrote, “Mosaics and patchwork quilts offer a way for us to see beauty and wholeness where there were once pieces. We get to see the pieces transformed from fragments into parts of a beautiful whole.” The same applies to stained-glass windows and this is the difficult but rewarding process of therapy. As a therapist, I truly believe that people have the primary colors and pieces needed to create meaningful and purposeful lives. My job is to help people recognize and combine their colors, or their strengths, passion, goals, etc., so that they are able to create “new colors” in life. Put a different way, I want to partner with clients as they develop their own “stained-glass window” by integrating their life pieces with new colors- a new whole version of themselves for light to shine through.
